Tunnel Vision

Have you ever been so stressed out or upset that your vision begins to tunnel and have a hyper-focused quality to it?

This is typical of a highly activated nervous system and is a function of our bodies that allows us to be able to keenly focus on a threat to help ourselves get away from it.

When we have experienced a trauma that becomes stuck in our nervous system, we may find that this hyper-focused awareness happens more frequently and during times when we don’t need it to.

Some ways we can work on this when we begin noticing the hyper-focus in our vision are:

  1. Slowly scanning the environment looking at objects one at a time.

  2. Shifting our vision by looking at something close to us distance-wise, something a little farther out, and something even farther away - taking time to move our vision out and back in a few times.

  3. Choosing one item to focus on intently, noticing what it is like to have our awareness there, then shifting our awareness and focus to what we notice in our peripheral vision.

Our bodies will slowly and surely begin to shift out of the activated hyper-focus to a more open visual field with an awareness that we are here safely in the present moment.

Looking forward to hearing your experience with how your vision is impacted by activation.
