Do you ever feel completely overwhelmed while you jump from one task to the next? Are you always so busy that you never feel like you have a chance to breathe or time to take for yourself during the day? Sometimes those who are the most productive can suffer from anxiety despite how put together they may seem on the surface. This is called high-functioning anxiety, and this post will give tips for identifying what it may look like and tools for how to help when it is popping up. Someone with high functioning anxiety can often appear to be a go-getter, organized, helpful, and hardworking, but under the surface, there could be:

  • People pleasing

  • Fear of failure

  • Imposter syndrome

  • Inability to say no

  • Placing others’ needs before their own

  • Overthinking

  • Perfectionism

  • Feeling wired and tired

What can we begin to do to begin working with some of the dynamics of high functioning anxiety?

  • Introduce small breaks

  • Check in with your body when you are feeling heightened anxiety and see what you can add in to support yourself - breath work, grounding, music, removing tasks from your plate.

  • Working with a professional to get to the root of the anxiety.
