With everything so accessible to us at a touch of a finger these days, it is easy to take that same mentality and apply it to our mindset on healing.
We might ask or tell ourselves:
Something is wrong with me if I’m not feeling positive 100% of the time.
Why can’t I just get over this
I know what’s going on but I just keep feeling uncomfortable and stuck.
While there may be many reasons behind the “why” of the above, it can also be important to hold grace and compassion for ourselves during our healing journeys.
If we had fallen and broken our arms we wouldn’t demand that our arm become fixed and curse ourselves if we might need to remain in a cast for a certain amount of time.
Why is it that we place those expectations on ourselves when it comes to our emotions and mental states?
We may have been told at some point:
Just get over it
You’re being a baby
There’s nothing wrong with you
You need to be strong
You have to keep pushing
Unfortunately, so many of us have received negative programming and patterning that leads us to believe that whenever we are feeling an emotion labeled “negative” that there is something wrong with us and that we need to force ourselves into a different state.
The problem behind force is that 9/10 times it does nothing but make a feeling stronger.
Our emotions are here for a reason and we are allowed to be exactly how we are in any given moment.
Our emotions are sign posts that let us know where to look closer, how to honor our safety, and where boundaries are being crossed.
Our emotions when validated and respected can open the door to profound transformation and growth.
One of my favorite clips is by a Rabbi who talks about the impetus of change and growth being feeling discomfort.
Check it out here whenever you get a chance and hit reply to let me know what you think (*important note - he mentions medication and there is importance in following what route is best to you and your specific situation in terms of that and your medical providers recommendations):
I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
