Embracing Discomfort and Change

“Some beautiful paths can’t be discovered without getting lost”.
-Erol Oran
There have been a lot of messages coming through recently on the cyclical nature of this world. The seasons, weather, emotions, tides, the moon, and the cosmos. Our very nature, and the nature of our world, is growth and change.
A lot of times we tend to lean into that which brings us comfort and that which is familiar. As humans, this fosters a sense of safety and security. If I have control over my environment and know what will occur at any given moment, nothing will throw me off guard and I will continue my homeostatic status quo. Unfortunately, we have become programmed to avoid that which is uncomfortable at all costs instead of being able to acknowledge and honor the discomfort.
This discomfort is one of the greatest tools that we have at our disposal. It sends messages of what is coming to the surface to be healed and enforced for our continued growth. It allows us to put into place healthy boundaries of what is acceptable or unacceptable in our lives.
If you look at yogic practices (or any physical activity) you will begin to see a somatic representation of discomfort and growth - how reasonably leaning into the pain and being with it free of judgment can bring about a shift.
So I challenge you to take just 5 minutes today to:
Sit with your body (either with your eyes opened or closed).
Look around at the various items in your space.
Pay attention to and feel where your body meets whatever it is that you are sitting, laying, or standing on.
Allow yourself to notice what your body is telling you at this moment in time - is there tension or tightness anywhere?
Sit with that for a moment and just notice what happens when you put all of your awareness on it. It may grow or it may lessen, all of which is 100% normal. Just continue to be with it, without judgment but with a sense of natural curiosity.
Your body has its own unique rhythm and needs to complete its various cycles energetically. By taking time in these moments to connect physically with your being, you begin to learn the subtleties of your body’s language and can start to discover how nothing, no matter how uncomfortable, stays that way forever.
Yours in wellness and healing,
Angela
